Event Description

Organizer: Ravindra Bhatt

The wave nature of quantum mechanical systems might give an impression that disorder effects in quantum mechanical systems tend to be suppressed and treatable as small perturbations. However, as shown by Anderson half a century ago, large disorder in quantum systems gives rise to fundamentally new phenomena. In some cases, effects of disorder are found to be stronger in quantum systems than in their classical counterparts. This two-day symposium brings together a set of talks on the effects of rare fluctuations and large disorder in quantum condensed matter systems, including spin, fermionic and bosonic models. Topics covered will include effects of Griffiths-McCoy singularities, large disorder renormalization group approaches, disorder effects in metallic systems, Coulomb gap effects in disordered insulators, many-body localization, as well as connections to quantum computation. Salient experimental results on disordered systems will be featured. In addition to lectures, ample time will be allowed for discussion of current status, and future directions.
