David Spergel is a theoretical astrophysicist whose research interest range from early universe cosmology to the search for extrasolar planets. Over the past several years, Spergel has played a major role in the analysis and interpretation of data from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP). His WMAP papers are the most cited papers in physics in the past decade. Spergel’s recent interests in cosmology have focused on non-Gaussianity, dark energy, and developing novel approaches to using CMB data and large-scale structure data to detect missing baryons and trace the growth of structure. Spergel is the Charles Young Professor of Astronomy and currently chairs the Department of Astrophysical Sciences
