Much of my work over the last few years has been devoted to studying the interplay between the gravitational and the gauge theory descriptions of such stacks of D-branes. This is particularly interesting for 3-branes where one finds a gauge theory in 3+1 dimensions. By now, a great deal of evidence has been accumulated for an exact duality between string theory in certain gravitational backgrounds related to the 3-brane geometry (they involve 5-dimensional anti-de Sitter space times a compact space) and various (super)conformal field theories in 3+1 dimensions. This AdS/CFT correspondence is an exciting research direction because it relates strings to gauge theories in a concrete fashion. Here is my introductory review of the AdS/CFT duality.
